Finland, Sweden to withdraw 200 million euros to build submarine AC cable

Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid and Swedish power grid operator Svenska are planning to spend nearly 200 million euros to build a submarine exchange cable connecting the two countries, transmission capacity of 800 megawatts.

According to Finnish power grid company Fingrid said, the two sides are ready to conduct a feasibility study, plans in the next decade to further expand the transmission capacity. At present, Fenno-Skan 1 connecting the two countries has been aging, the construction of new projects is to make up for this deficiency at the same time, expand the transmission capacity, improve the regional energy supply security. Swedish power grid company said the submarine AC cable transmission capacity of 800 megawatts, equivalent to nearly 30% increase in transmission capacity between the two countries, the initial design cost of nearly 200 million euros, to be completed and put into operation in 2025.

Jukka Ruusunen, president of the Finnish power grid, said the submarine exchange cable project on the Finnish national economic development has a very important role. In addition to directly benefiting the electricity market, increased transmission capacity means that grid supply reliability and power system flexibility will be further enhanced, as well as the integration of more renewable energy is also critical.
