Suitable insulation materials for power cable

Share:
What is wire & Cable Insulation?

Insulation is a non-conductive material within a cable's construction. It is also often called a dielectric in radio frequency cables.

Insulation resists electrical leakage, which prevents the wire’s current from coming into contact with other wires and cables nearby. It also preserves the material integrity of the wire by protecting against environmental threats such as water and heat. The longevity and effectiveness of a wire depend on its insulation.

Power cables are used in many industries. They have many advantages and are widely used. Next, what insulating material is suitable for power cables?

1. Plastic: Power cable with extruded plastic insulation layer. Commonly used plastics are polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and cross-linked polyethylene. The plastic cable has simple structure, convenient manufacturing and processing, light weight, convenient installation and installation, and is not restricted by the laying drop. Therefore, it is widely used as medium and low voltage cables and has a tendency to replace viscous impregnated oil paper cables. Its biggest disadvantage is the existence of tree-like breakdown, which limits its use at higher voltages.

2. Rubber: The insulating layer is made of rubber plus various compounding agents, extruded on the conductive wire core after being fully mixed, and then heated and vulcanized. It is soft and flexible, suitable for occasions with frequent movement and small bending radius.

The above is about insulation materials suitable for power cables.
